What is GROW? GROW (Grassroots On-Site Work) strengthens the relationships between students and their grassroots health partners. Every year, 3-5 students from each chapter intern on the ground for 3-8 weeks with their partner organization. The mutual learning that results strengthens the capacity of both sides. Back on campus, students share their learning with their chapters, equipping them with the firsthand knowledge to be improved advocates for the following year. Who's our partner? Our partner is Social Action for Children Women (SAW) is located in Mae Sot, Thailand, along the Thai/Burma border. They work with Burmese refugees and migrant workers who come across the border and end up living in rural, isolated communities due to lack of documentation. SAW was founded in June 2000 in Mae Sot, Thailand. Since 1962, there has been an oppressive military regime in Burma, with widespread corruption and isolationist policies. Among those affected by many human rights violations are the migrants and refugees along the border. They have no legal status and little foreign assistance, therefore are living in poverty and often being exploited and physically or sexually abused. The programs that SAW runs include vocational training, shelters, education about mental health, trafficking, HIV/AIDS, and rights awareness. Their community health outreach program (CHOP) is centered around education because education is more sustainable than materials/supplies. By equipping these peer educators with health education, they are able to go to their communities and spread this knowledge laterally. Some of the topics covered in these workshops include sexual and reproductive health, personal hygiene, dental hygiene, and sustainability.
